Gurus believe that organized food stuff would have been exhibited in large dolia jars set in holes carved in the stone counter, equivalent to today’s acquire-out dining establishments.

The excavations uncovered duck, pig, goat, and fish bones, as very well as snail shells amid shards of earthen pottery, suggesting that some variety of meat and seafood stew could have been on the menu. The thermopolium was a fixture of Pompeii—the recently identified internet site is just a single of 80 such eating places that have been located in the city—because inadequate Roman households couldn’t find the money for to have kitchens in their households. And, in an inversion of present-day culture, the rich didn’t go out for high-priced meals. Rather, they had enslaved workers get ready feasts at home, served up in richly embellished banquet halls.
